1881 The first Accident reinsurance treaty is signed with the Cologne Accident, Cologne.
 

 
At the end of February 1880, the final cut through in the 15 kilometres long Gotthard Tunnel is made. The last track is laid on 1 March 1880; on the same day a special train with invited guests crosses the Alps by tunnel. The official opening takes place on 1 June 1882.
 

 
1882 The company moves yet again, this time to Bahnhofstrasse 44. In the first 50 years of its existence, the company changes its domicile no less than seven times before settling at Mythenquai 60 in 1913.
 

 
1885 A welfare fund is set up for the employees of Swiss Re. The corresponding resolution is passed by the General Meeting of 29 May 1885.

In the 1880s, electricity stepped forward. Thomas Alva Edison's work was pioneering in various fields of technology. In 1877/78 he develops the carbon transmitter which enables the telephone, patented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell, to be used over greater distances. In 1878 he invents the phonograph, a year later the carbon filament lamp.
