Theater Neumarkt
During the 50s and 60s, interest grew in new and experimental forms of theatre. In the course of these developments, the Theater Neumarkt was founded in 1966 right in the heart of Zurich's old town. Its two auditoriums, one in the old guild house at Neumarkt 5 and the other right next door in Chorgasse, guarantee an intimate and emotional atmosphere that enables close contact with the actors and drama on stage. The main auditorium accommodates up to 160 spectators, while the Chorgasse theatre seats up to about 40, depending on the stage design.
Barbara Weber and Rafael Sanchez have been managing the Theatre Neumarkt since its 2008/2009 season. The two co-directors, a good five years younger than the undertaking they are in charge of, feel committed to the experimental and modern approach that has earned the theatre its reputation across Europe. Both have made a name for themselves in recent years as directors with their intelligent and playful productions staged in Hamburg, Munich, Basel and Zurich.
Theater Neumarkt has its own troupe, currently with seven actors, as well as a number of prestigious guests, such as the 2009 Actress of the Year Birgit Minichmayr. Some of the most important directors working in German-speaking countries have been brought on board for the 2009/2010 season: Martin Kušej, Stefan Pucher and Sebastian Baumgarten. There are about a dozen productions per season, as well as numerous talks and literary events that address current affairs and important life issues. Weekend seminars held under the title of Schule des Lebens (The School of Life) focus on various topics and offer spectators the opportunity to interact with the theatre's artists and with prominent specialists on a personal level.
