NCCR Climate
Climate change and its impact on society are high on the scientific community’s list of concerns. The National Centre of Competence in Research on Climate (NCCR Climate), based in Bern, Switzerland, was established in 2001 to drive research and advance understanding of the topic.
The NCCR seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the climate system through interdisciplinary research into its variability and change potential. The organisation comprises a scientific network of 130 researchers from 13 partner institutions, including the University of Bern and ETH Zurich, both prominent climate research centres. The NCCR is unique in its interdisciplinary focus, not just in Switzerland and Europe, but globally. Its research includes reconstructing past climates, studying key physical, chemical and ecological processes and developing seasonal forecasting methods.
As a sponsor, Swiss Re is supporting some of the most important climatic research currently being undertaken worldwide. This research also has practical applications as Swiss Re can use many of the findings to refine its own climatic modelling.
