Japan occupies a special place in Swiss Re’s history. In 1913, we signed the first contract in Japan with Kobe Marine Transport & Fire Insurance. We are proud that, today, we can celebrate 100 years of business relations with your country. Over these 100 years, we have supported many more clients and we have, again and again, been impressed by the professionalism and sophistication of the Japanese insurance sector.
The direct insurance industry is on the road to recovery with further progress expected this year, according to Swiss Re’s latest sigma study. Worldwide premiums for life and non-life insurance grew by an inflation-adjusted 2% to USD 2 941 billion in 2003. sigma’s annual review of developments in world insurance shows premiums and results in non-life business increased markedly in 2003. Life insurers reported improved profitability despite a slight decline in premium income. The recovery is set to continue in 2004.
The world's urban population is forecast to grow by about 1.4 billion to 5 billion between 2011 and 2030, with 90% of the increase coming in the emerging markets. Swiss Re's latest sigma study Urbanisation in emerging markets: boon and bane for insurers reviews the rapid growth of towns and cities in emerging markets. It also addresses the opportunities and challenges that urbanisation presents with respect to risk management for insurers and governments alike.
World insurance premium volume rose slightly to USD 4270 billion in 2008. However, adjusted for inflation, premiums declined by 2%. Global life premiums fell by 3.5% in 2008, mainly driven by a sharp fall in the sale of unit-linked and single premium life insurance products in the industrialised countries. Non-life premiums decreased by 0.8%.
