Swiss Re Academy relaunches "Life Insurance Management" course for Latin America

December 2011 - In October of this year, Swiss Re Academy held its "Life Insurance Management" course for a group of Latin American executives. The course was relaunched after a break of several years from when it was offered in Switzerland by the SITC (now Swiss Re Academy).

The course's academic program pivots on a single premise: in order to manage a life insurance company, one needs to have various years of experience and solid training that encompasses a number of disciplines. Applying its experience in the life sector, Swiss Re Academy combined all these disciplines and created the "Life Insurance Management" course. In 2011, the course's academic program was revised, updated and relaunched for Swiss Re clients in Latin America.

Ed Varhola, Americas VP of Learning and Development, Client Training, asserted: “This course was a great collaborative effort from three different regions. The teamwork of Swiss Re Academy in the US the Latin America business unit and the expertise of the Swiss Re Academy Zurich team made this a great event.”

For three weeks at the Polyglot training center in Zurich, representatives from Swiss Re Academy and a team of Swiss Re executives worked to provide participants, executives from Swiss Re corporate clients, with the basic tools needed to comprehensively manage a life insurance company. The topics addressed ranged from product marketing and new channel development to the principles of actuarial mathematics applied to insurance, life insurance rating and technical accounting. The knowledge gained from the course modules was then consolidated using a simulation game that allows participants to fully manage a life insurance company (known as the insurance management simulation (IMS) program).

The course was given in Spanish. According to the group of executives participating in the course, the latter truly bolsters their value when it comes to their own career tracks at their respective companies. The testimonial of Jacob Wind, a Swiss Re director for various Latin American markets in the 1970s and 1980s, included in the video commemorating Swiss Re's 100-year anniversary of operations in Latin America, serves as a testament to its value. In addition to training, another objective sought by Swiss Re Academy is networking. To facilitate this goal, the course program included a series of social and recreational activities: a welcome reception, a walk through Zurich, a trip to Pilatus mountain, a guided tour of Swiss Re's most prominent building in Rüschlikon, where a dinner was also hosted, and a lunch at the company's headquarters in Mythenquai.
