Swiss Re continues its 65-year participation in the FIDES conference
June 2011 - On May 30, 2011, Swiss Re joined the Honduras Chamber of the Insurance Industry (CAHDA) to officially open the 33rd FIDES conference, welcoming the 850 participants with a dinner at the Club Árabe in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. For the Inter American Federation of Insurers (FIDES), this opening dinner celebration kicked off the most important insurance industry meeting in Latin America. For Swiss Re, the dinner marked the company’s century-long history of operations in Latin America.
Swiss Re shared a video highlighting its century of service to the Latin American market. “It’s time to get together with clients and celebrate what we have jointly achieved in the past 100 years”, said Patrick Mailloux Swiss Re’s head of reinsurance operations in Latin America. Michel Lies, chairman of global partnerships at Swiss Re, spoke briefly to participants welcoming them to the 33rd FIDES meeting, as well, announcing the opening of a new Swiss Re Corporate Solutions office in Miami. Together with the Mexico and Brazil offices, Swiss Re will use this new office as a platform to serve clients throughout Latin America.
The first Hemispheric Insurance Conference was held in New York in 1946, as the initial step toward creating the Inter American Federation of Insurers. Over the past 65 years, Swiss Re has strongly supported the Federation. This story is reflected in Swiss Re’s publication “Our First Century,” a summary of the company’s first 100 years in Latin America and a valuable overview of the history of insurance in the region.
The FIDES conference, the industry’s top meeting, was kicked off this year by the President of the Republic of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo. FIDES 2011 featured two key note speakers, as well as ample opportunities for bilateral meetings. During the encounter, Swiss Re held over 100 meetings with clients, brokers and prospects in its three private conference rooms.
The first key note speech, “The impact of social reform on development in Latin America, the role of the private sector and the importance of corporate social responsibility,” was given by the Álvaro Uribe, the former president of Colombia. Mr. Uribe acknowledged the policy support efforts made in Honduras as well as the assistance provided to FIDES in hosting the conference in San Pedro Sula. The former president also spoke of the strong GDP growth in Latin America, the increased life expectancy in the region, and the progress made possible by the higher growth rates recorded.
Day two of the conference featured a panel explaining the new Solvency II regulations. The panel consisted of some of the most important names in the sector, such as Pilar González de Frutos, chairwoman of the Spanish Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Institutions (UNESPA); Osvaldo Macías, director of insurance in Chile; Fernando Solís Soberón, managing director of long-term savings at the Mexican Banorte Financial Group; Franklin Santarelli, managing director of Latin American financial institutions at Fitch and head of the Latin American analytics team for banking and insurance companies.
