Counting Down to Solar Impulse Round-the-World Departure with Clients in Abu Dhabi

With just a few days to go to the start of Solar Impulse' round-the-world flight, Corporate Solutions' Dubai team hosted clients to an exclusive private viewing of Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) at Al Bateen airport in Abu Dhabi.

After the Solar Impulse prototype’s 8 world records, when it became the first solar airplane ever to fly through the night, between two continents, and across the United States, it's now time for pioneers and pilots, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, to commence the final phase of the adventure: the 2015 round-the-world flight. It will be a great historic first: for such an adventure, as for any premiere, there are no references.

Si2 will depart from Abu Dhabi in a few days and sets out to demonstrate what can be possible with clean technologies.  Throughout the entire project, the Solar Impulse team have been faced with a number of challenges, leading them to push the limits of technological, human and piloting performance. Challenges vary across a diverse range of disciplines from energy storage, logistics, materials and even insurance.  The challenge for Swiss Re Corporate Solutions was to offer insurance protection to the prototype airplane, an airplane which others believed to be uninsurable and that the aviation industry considered impossible. Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is the sole insurance provider to Solar Impulse providing hull insurance, aircraft liability and crew personal accident coverage.

Si2 will take-off from Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirate, in late February or early March and return by late July or early August 2015. The route includes stops in Muscat, Oman; Ahmedabad and Varanasi, India; Mandalay, Myanmar; and Chongqing and Nanjing, China. After crossing the Pacific Ocean via Hawaii, Si2 will fly across the Continental U.S.A. stopping in three locations – Phoenix, and New York City at JFK. A location in the Midwest will be decided dependent on weather conditions. After crossing the Atlantic, the final legs include a stop-over in Southern Europe or North Africa before arriving back in Abu Dhabi.

The event was attended by several Corporate Solutions clients and brokers, as well as the Swiss Ambassador to the UAE, who appreciated the unique opportunity to see the plane and exchange words with the Solar Impulse Team. Swiss Re Corporate Solutions will host clients, brokers and employees at similar events along the route.
