The nuts and bolts of making a difference

Here’s one for the actuaries: How many reinsurers does it take to build an awesome BMX bike? Swiss Re recently found out – and made a difference to some special children at the same time.

Unassembled BMX bikes were purchased by Swiss Re and assembled by staff under the supervision of professional bike mechanics.  Over 80 Swiss Re staff from Australia participated in one of two sessions which were held in April and May.   Twelve bikes were assembled and donated to children from Camp Quality - the charity which supports children with cancer and their families.

The destination of the bikes was kept a secret from staff until the final moments when Camp Quality children arrived to collect their bikes in person.

The children broke into huge smiles at the sight of their new ‘wheels’.  Swiss Re staff were also looking pretty chuffed about what was a  fun, memorable and meaningful team building event – and about their new found bike-building skills!

The sessions were organised by Swiss Re staff volunteers and facilitated by Corporate Challenge.
