ICRC Corporate Support Group

Coincidentally, the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) and Swiss Re were both established in Switzerland in 1863. Over the years it has become clear that our two organisations have far more than their foundation date in common. In 2005 Swiss Re became a founding member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Corporate Support Group. This group constitutes the ICRC’s first long-term partnership with the private sector. As part of this milestone collaboration initiative, we will make a substantial contribution to the ICRC’s daily operations and staff training.

Humanitarian values and sustainable development

Swiss Re, by entering a partnership with the ICRC, emphasises its commitment to social responsibility, which forms part of the company’s Corporate Philosophy and Responsibility framework. Respect for humanitarian values is indispensable to our society’s sustainable development. Swiss Re, as a global reinsurer, has an intrinsic interest in supporting efforts to promote peace and security for a sustainable future. We exchange knowledge and know-how on issues of mutual interest such as risk management, human resources development, training, logistics, information technology and communication.

Common system of beliefs

The ICRC is an impartial, neutral and independent organisation, whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence, and to offer them assistance. The committee also seeks to prevent suffering by promoting, strengthening and developing humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. We strongly identify with this belief system, which focuses on the vital work of building the foundations for a sustainable future. Dr Jakob Kellenberger, President of the ICRC explains, “We are increasingly having to deal with the humanitarian fallout of collapsed or collapsing governments that are either unwilling or unable to meet their obligations”. In this context, strong public-private partnerships are indispensable in securing a stable tomorrow.

Corporate responsibility

Corporate responsibility

We have a long-standing commitment to corporate responsibility and strive to implement this across our business. Our performance has received high ratings from independent third-party organisations.
