Enabling sustainable progress: 2014 Corporate Responsibility Report

This Report details our strategic approach to corporate responsibility and reviews the main actions we have taken in 2014 to support sustainable progress.

Our annual Corporate Responsibility Report is an essential part of our long-standing commitment as a responsible company. It expresses our wish to be accountable to all our stakeholders.

Like previous editions, the 2014 Report explains our approach to corporate responsibility and summarises our key achievements in five areas: business solutions, risk management, stakeholder dialogue, internal environmental management and employee relations. All five chapters have been audited by PwC.

The 2014 Report is available for download or online. You can also order a hard copy from our library.

Helping to address global challenges with our solutions

In our core business, we continued to offer various re/insurance solutions that address environmental and social challenges. In 2014, several of them paid out to our partners after they had suffered damage from excessive rainfall, windstorms, floods etc. We have also offered protection to large offshore wind farm projects (for construction and maintenance risks) and to a major pension fund in the UK (for longevity risk). See the "Creating solutions for sustainability" chapter.

Strong rise in in-house sustainability screenings

In our risk management, we kept up our efforts to identify and assess potential sustainability risks in our business. Indeed, the number of transactions we screened more than doubled within one year, from 210 in 2013 to 454 in 2014. We decided to abstain in 43 cases and specified further conditions in 60 cases. See the "Extending our risk intelligence" chapter.

Increased focus on infrastructure investment and autonomous cars

We also deepened our interest in two topics our internal specialists had previously identified as "emerging risks": infrastructure investment and new forms of mobility, in particular autonomous cars. You can read about our follow-up activities in the "Exploring and shaping the risk landscape" chapter.

Highlights described in the other chapters include our membership of the newly established RE100 initiative (see "Reducing our environmental footprint") and our High Growth Development Programme (see "Being an employer of choice").

The report again doubles as annual Communication on Progress for the UN Global Compact and our Public Disclosure of Progress" for the UNEP FI Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), in which we continue to play an active role.
