Enabling sustainable progress: 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report

The Report details our strategic approach to corporate responsibility and reviews the actions we have taken in 2013 to support sustainable progress.

The 2013 edition of our Corporate Responsibility Report provides a detailed account of our approach to corporate responsibility and our key achievements in five areas: product development, risk management, stakeholder dialogue, internal environmental management and employee relations. A separate chapter of the Report is devoted to each of these topics. To find out about the activities of the Swiss Re Foundation, please read its separate, comprehensive report.

In this year's Corporate Responsibility Report, we have made a significant improvement to underline our sense of accountability to our stakeholders: All five main chapters have now received independent assurance from PricewaterhouseCoopers, up from three chapters last year. In other words, the information we present there has been found to be reliable and accurate.

Tangible achievements

We helped both developed and developing countries to address sustainability issues in 2013. For instance, we carried out the Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA) study for New York City and continued our involvement in the Grow Africa Partnership to develop agricultural insurance in Sub-Saharan countries. You can find out more about these and other projects in the chapter "Creating solutions for sustainability."

In risk management, we have amended four policies of our Sustainability Risk Framework to account for recent risk developments affecting the defence industry, nuclear weapons proliferation, oil and gas exploration, and forestry and logging. Over the full year, we assessed 210 transactions through the Sensitive Business Risk process: as a result, we abstained from 27 transactions and issued positive recommendations with conditions in 26 cases. To learn more about these advanced risk management tools, read the chapter "Extending our risk intelligence."

Regarding our own carbon footprint, we have also chalked up notable achievements. For example, we have completed the first phase of our Greenhouse Neutral Programme, reducing our CO2 emissions by 56.5% per employee over the ten years since 2003. Confirming our commitment to tackle our own footprint, we have now devised a follow-up strategy up to 2020. Linked to this, we have also launched a second cycle of our popular COyou2 programme, which offers our employees grants for emissions-cutting investments. Read the chapter "Reducing our environmental footprint" for further details.

Confirming our commitments

Our latest Corporate Responsibility Report confirms two commitments we made to the United Nations. Firstly, it continues to serve as our annual Communication on Progress for the UN Global Compact. And, secondly, it includes our "public disclosure of progress" for the UNEP FI Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), in which we have been playing an active role.
