ETH Zurich, Department of Architecture
Visiting Artist / gta exhibitions

Ranked among the top ten faculties in its field, the ETH Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) combines high-quality teaching with outstanding research. In cooperation with Swiss Re, D-ARCH is launching a new Visiting Artist programme in 2017 designed to highlight the interdisciplinary approach between architecture and the arts.

The programme extends the existing format of gta exhibitions, by providing an experimental platform and sustained artist-student interaction, rather than relying on finished artwork, through which to explore artistic themes linking closely to academic work at D-ARCH.

The Visiting Artist programme invites a recognised artist to produce an exhibition while also working with architecture students, all during an entire semester. Understanding the architectural exhibition as a medi-um of research and teaching, this format allows the visiting artist to spend time at the school, meet faculty and students and become involved in academic life at ETH.

The first visiting artist is the internationally known conceptual artist and fine art photographer Christopher Williams, who will reflect upon the intersection of photography and architectural design. His monographic exhibition Supplements, Models, Prototypes in February 2017 showcases his personal collection of display walls as well as a series of wall sculptures. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, the artist will enrich his project with lectures, round-tables and student meetings within D-ARCH.

In May 2017, Christopher Williams presents his first theatre production at Miller's Studio in Zurich, another institution partnering with Swiss Re. This play is produced in dialogue with the show at gta exhibitions. Within the theatrical setting, Christopher Williams seeks to relax the boundaries between the different modes of constructing pro-visual spaces. Here, the construction of a photographic image and of a theatri-cal image are meant to be seen as analogous activities informing each other, each acting upon the other to produce a new term.
