Swiss Re hosts Knowledge Seminar in Toronto

Select clients and brokers of Swiss Re’s Industrial Risk Insurer (IRI) attended a Knowledge Seminar and reception on 19 May at the St. Andrew’s Club & Conference Centre in Toronto.

Emerging risks

With a presentation on “Emerging Risks: News and Implications for the Insurance Business,” the Toronto event kicked off this year's Knowledge Seminar series in North America. Swiss Re’s Insurance & Specialty teams plan to host nine seminars globally throughout 2010. These events are designed to share knowledge on relevant topics affecting the insurance industry.

Claudio Totino, Head of North America Property in Canada, opened the Toronto Knowledge Seminar by welcoming the participants to the event and providing a brief overview of Swiss Re's 1st quarter financial results. Mr. Totino also reinforced Swiss Re's commitment to the Canadian market, and highlighted Swiss Re’s wide a array of insurance products and solutions.

Facing the risk landscape

Martin WeymannThis year's Toronto Knowledge Seminar featured Martin Weymann, Swiss Re’s Senior Risk Manager of Emerging Risk Management. During his presentation, Mr. Weymann outlined some of the major risks societies face and provided a brief history of how these risks became recognizable over time.

"People need to realize that changes in the risk landscape of environmental, technological, socio-political, as well as financial markets, could significantly affect future property business in Canada,” Mr. Weymann said. “An active monitoring of the risk landscape is therefore vital for success.”

In illustrating some of these risks, Mr. Weymann pointed out some concrete examples, including large-scale blackouts due to either ice or solar storms. According to Mr. Weymann, these events need to be taken into consideration when insuring the respective infrastructure risks.

The 2010 Toronto Knowledge Seminar concluded with a cocktail reception, allowing all invited guests the opportunity to network with each other, the Swiss Re IRI team, and address specific questions on emerging risks to Mr. Weymann.
