An important part of Swiss Re's mission is to anticipate, identify and understand the developments which shape the future risk landscape. These capabilities are essential in capital and risk management. This is why the company has established a formal process to help answer fundamental questions on the key market, regulatory, scientific and social trends that will impact our future business environment.

Sigma and many other publications from Swiss Re on global developments in insurance and risk management underscore the company’s reputation for superior knowledge and expertise. These publications cover subjects ranging from highly technical areas of interest to underwriters and insurers, to studies about more diverse risks that pose a threat to society in general.

Swiss Re and sustainability

Corporations worldwide are becoming increasingly aware of their role in society. In this context, Swiss Re is committed to creating economic value while preserving natural resources and acting responsibly towards society. Thus, Swiss Re has adopted sustainability as a core value.

Swiss Re supports and contributes expert knowledge to research by various scientific and academic institutions into climate change, water management and related issues. The company has been active on such international platforms as the United Nations Environmental Program Finance Initiative and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Swiss Re has also given expert input on sustainable development to the governments, organizations and clients of various countries.

Internally, Swiss Re has developed a comprehensive environmental management system aimed at reducing its own environmental footprint. In October 2003, Swiss Re announced the “Greenhouse Neutral” program to make its operations carbon neutral over a 10 year period. And this target was achieved earlier than scheduled in 2007. In January 2007, Swiss Re announced the “COYou2 Reduce & Gain Programme” designed to encourage Swiss Re employees around the globe to adopt carbon neutral living styles and practices.

In addition, Swiss Re sponsors the International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management, which recognizes community-based watershed management programmes. The award enables the realization of projects which can be used as benchmarks for similar endeavours to encourage the use and protection of watershed resources.

In China, Swiss Re partnered with the Center for Environmental Education & Communications (CEEC) of the State Environment Protection Administration from 2003 to 2008 to organize and sponsor an annual, nation-wide competition for students as part of a grassroots programme to raise awareness for environmental protection themes. And starting from 2009, Swiss Re works with CEEC to promote environmental courses among selected universities in China.

In recognition of its sustainability programme and related activities, Swiss Re has been confirmed as the insurance sector leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability index.
