Meet our graduates

Michael G. Bohannon

Since joining Swiss Re in August 2014, I was given the opportunity to work in three different teams within Asset Management from Finance to the CIO Office. The nature of the programme allows you to get an overall view of the company on both the insurance and Asset Management side of the business by giving graduates the ability to communicate and learn from senior members of the company. The leadership exposure and proper trainings make the graduate programme the perfect blend of learning and responsibility for incoming graduates and offers an opportunity to learn at your own pace, while encouraging quick, steady growth. This programme offers much more than just the multiple training blocks in Zurich, high profile projects, a large international network and job rotations; it offers young professionals an unprecedented platform to success I have not found anywhere else to date.

Since joining the graduates@swissre programme in September 2014 I have been given great exposure to the (re)insurance market. The training in Zurich throughout the programme gave me a strong introduction to the industry as well as a chance to establish a great network of colleagues, and friends, from many different locations. I have had the chance to complete two rotations since joining Swiss Re which has increased both the breadth and depth of my knowledge. I was given exposure to some of the largest UK Life & Health clients very early and have also been greatly supported in the completion of Actuarial exams.

I joined the property treaty underwriting team in Beijing through the graduate programme in 2014. The best things I enjoyed from the programme were the opportunities to come to Zurich for trainings and networking as well as the rotation opportunities in different functions and/or locations. These really helped me to build a foundation for my understanding of Swiss Re as a company and the reinsurance business. During my time in the property treaty team in Beijing, I had the opportunity to look at the facultative business which helped me gain another aspect of looking at risks. My team also dealt with many initiatives and government related Nat Cat schemes which I think are innovative and meaningful to the society in China. I really appreciate my experience at Swiss Re, and I think it is a great place to start your career.

What I particularly like about the graduates@swissre programme is the combination of on-the-job and classroom trainings. This provided me with a solid foundation and holistic understanding of the re/insurance world. My role in Group Economic Value Management allowed me to learn about various facets of the business, including Underwriting, Treasury and Asset Management. I have subsequently been able to develop an expertise in a range of topics, including contract and transaction valuation as well as asset-liability management. Moreover being part of the graduates community has allowed me to build a global network. Indeed, Swiss Re is a great company with a broad range of experts from different backgrounds where you can continuously learn and grow.

I joined the graduates@swissre programme in 2015 as an Analyst in the Cat Perils team in Bangalore. I must say that I had started the journey with an unclear understanding of what lay ahead. But I am very glad to proclaim that the programme has changed my life. It has given my career a new dimension, provided me with amazing opportunities in the form of multiple rotations in diverse locations and domains such as Economic Research, Consulting and Casualty Risk Engineering. The past year has not only been exciting but it has also been stimulating, challenging me to reach out of my comfort zone to do more and be more. The programme provides a global platform for interaction and an intense exposure to Swiss Re as a whole. The graduates@swissre will always hold a special place in my heart and I would highly recommend the programme to all the freshers who want to start their career on a high note.

I joined the graduates@swissre programme in 2015 as part of the Americas Strategy and Operations team based in Armonk, NY. The professional as well as personal development I have gained from the programme has been more rewarding than I ever imagined starting out in my first career. The global network, advanced training, and international exposure, are all aspects which I will be able to take with me throughout the rest of my career, and are what make the graduates programme such a great development programme. I am grateful to be a part of this programme and am excited to see where my SwissRe journey takes me.
