Indaba: a Southern African tradition, a new way to meet for the insurance industry

Africa is becoming a global growth engine, and the insurance sector can play a substantial role in supporting it. Indabas are one example of how Swiss Re is working to become the leading global reinsurer in the region.

In October 2014, Swiss Re sponsored an indaba for insurance industry leaders in Mozambique . The word, which is Zulu, means "knowledge-sharing event."

A tried and true way to connect

Over 120 insurance professionals, including brokers, insurers and regulators, attended the Maputo event to discuss topics such as the region's booming energy sector, and how re/insurers can support it.

This was not Swiss Re's first indaba. The concept was tested in South Africa and Kenya, with similar success. "With these events, we are building trust and strengthening ties as well as showcasing our expertise", said Fabrice Jerlin, Pan-African Market Underwriter for Swiss Re.

Fast growth on the agenda

Between 2010 and 2015, seven out of the ten fastest-growing economies in the world have been in Africa.

Bringing industry leaders together through indabas is part of Swiss Re's strategy of working "smarter together" to help sustain the momentum in Sub-Saharan Africa and to become the leading global reinsurer in the region.

"If we want to reach our goal, we have to fit our approach to African markets and provide simple, lean and scalable solutions," Jerlin said. "And we also have to be willing to learn. Indabas aren't just for our clients: they're for Swiss Re as well."
